In addition to policies addressing sexual misconduct, harassment, and child and youth protection, the PC(USA) Book of Order requires each council of church to adopt and implement an antiracism policy (G-3.0106). This requirement was approved at the 225th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) (2023). This reflects the PC(USA)'s ongoing work and witness to the transforming power of the Gospel of Jesus Christ in the world (see also the Matthew 25 movement and it's invitation and challenge to participate in eradicating systemic poverty, dismantling structural racism, and building congregational vitality).
At the November 2024 stated meeting of Calvin Presbyterian Church's Session, and after discussions and discernment about the Matthew 25 movement beginning in January 2024, and then examining the PC(USA)'s Antiracism Policy (Facing Racism), Calvin Presbyterian Church's Session approved the Antiracism Policy for Calvin Presbyterian Church. Our policy is centered around growing in our understanding of the intersecting dynamics of our history, of race, and of the Church. It is centered around our adopting a posture of being curious - being curious about history and dynamics that we may not know about, being curious about the experiences of others, being curious about and open to areas in which we need to repent, and of being curious about how "we can better live into, live out, and proclaim the manifold fullness of the Kingdom of God." In short, every journey begins with a first step. This is our first step as a church. |
